Emma Hibbard

Community Ambassador, AB

I am a happily married mom of two girls, who are the main reason I was drawn to Gems for Gems. The idea that we can help women to know their strengths, and how to use them to empower themselves, is something I fully believe in. In my “past life” before kids, I received a B.A in Sociology with a major in Child and Youth Care work/ Child Development and enjoyed working with special needs children until I decided to stay home when I had my own children. Since then I have volunteered extensively in their schools and sporting activities and felt it was time to do something outside of their lives that I knew would continue to help others.

Brittany Brander

Alberta Community Ambassador

Brittany is the Founding Director of Bourbon & Honey Co., a marketing and communications agency that helps purpose-driven organizations create impact, legacy and significance in their communities. In her spare time, she is busy trying new experiences around the city (ballroom dancing, anyone?), reading books, or finding new volunteer opportunities.

How Gems for Gems impacts me: While I don’t have extensive personal experience with domestic abuse, I do know what it is like to be unable to live life free and without shame. I am inspired, encouraged and motivated to help Gems for Gems advance the mission to not only end the cycle of domestic abuse but to empower these women to create and live life on their terms and create lasting change for generations to come.

Cheryl Sanguinetti

Community Ambassador, AB

I believe in supporting organizations that are making a difference and I love to get behind ones that specifically are helping women. Having grown up with my mom working tirelessly at CWES, I heard countless stories of the women and children there and it always struck a cord. While the concept behind Gem for Gems seems so simple, it really resonates with me. I believe when we empower women in the small ways, it can give them confidence in big ways.

I also believe that I have a lot to offer in terms of my work experience. Because I truly believe I can help to make a difference. I love to educate and am comfortable presenting, I have honed my networking skills and have a community of people that I could get on board for initiatives and events, and I have 20 years of experience in marketing and admin. Plus I love people.

Emily Sztabzyb

Community Ambassador, AB

Who will speak for them if not us? Women who are abused, neglected and overlooked need a voice. That voice should give them the courage and strength to raise their own. Loud. So as not to be stepped on or
stepped over anymore.

Emily Talia Sztabzyb began as an actor, eventually branching out to the area of playwrighting, and alongside Gahl Pratt Pardes wrote the play Hinged, an exploration into the closed doors of domestic abuse. She hopes this story can enlighten and inspire those unaware, and those all too aware, about this issue we are all faced with, whether directly or indirectly.

Kate Hanna

Community Ambassador, AB

I spent a large portion of my youth overcoming bullying. When I moved to Calgary almost 11 years ago, I wanted to help women support other women, and that has become my passion. Whether it be young girls, teens, young women or greater, I believe we have to stand up for each other and especially be the voice for those who don’t have one. The Gems for Gems mission statement couldn’t ring more true for me, and I would love to do my part, as big or small as that may be, to help empower other women and end this fight against violence.

She co-founded the Ignore No More Run for Respect along with her partner, and fellow Gem for Gems ambassador Mike Cameron. The run is aimed at raising awareness around gender-based violence and specifically to engage men and boys in the conversation.

Sharon Shore

Community Ambassador, AB

I have been lucky to have a tribe of extraordinary women to surround me, and lift me, for most of my life. I think that there are many types of abuse. And even though some women feel lucky to not have had physical abuse happen to them, some, through insecurities, don’t realize the emotional and mental abuse that has been inflicted on them. The other thing, that I don’t hear a lot of, but would like to bring light to is the domestic abuse to men. I am heavily impacted by the suicide rate in our country, and the rate with men who are afraid to speak out about their feelings, is something that I think we could grow to address.

Tom Barker

Community Ambassador, AB

With personality and drive that could halt a train, I bring an empowering and loving energy to any room. Being a radio host and “local celebrity”, I am used to being well known and build strong meaningful connections with community members.
I consistently find new and innovative ways to improve our community, including hosting and emceeing events, raising money for local initiatives and advocating for those who may not have a voice.
Gems For Gems to me means strong and independent women, standing up for what is right. Gems impacts me by educating men about domestic violence within Calgary, a part of the initiative of which without it, would be missing a piece.
Gems For Gems has done incredible work within the domestic abuse advocacy community and will sure blaze a trail for its successors to come.

Josee Khoury

Community Ambassador, AB

I believe as a woman, we must stand together, to support and give strength to others in need. I believe in gems’ cause fully; I’ve watched it be an outlet for those I love to find healing. I want to support Gems’ growth because I personally know so many women who could gain from the support of it.

Ashley Rodman

Community Ambassador, AB

As a survivor of domestic violence with two young children that experienced the horror, I have learned how to be not only there for myself but there for my kids. I went through a dark time and would have given anything to have somewhere to turn that I could see someone stand up and say: “no, this will be ok; here is your manual on how to get through this.”

I hope that what I have learned and gone through could be a road map for someone else to find their way out of a situation that they may need help with. I have waited a long time to stand in my bathroom mirror and look at myself and say to myself “you will no longer hold me down!” I am now in a place where I want to give back and be there for these survivors when they need it the most.

Sarah Irwin

Community Ambassador, AB

I am currently a nursing student and have always found an interest in women’s health. I hope that one day I can specialize in labour and delivery but would also love the experience to work at the women’s health centre.

Everyone has had their hardships and you cannot compare your own to anyone else’s experience. Even myself, I have dealt through hardships that showed me my limitations and what it took for me to build myself back up. Gems for Gems specializes in dealing with women who have experienced domestic abuse, but in the grand scheme, it is about empowering other women to stand up for themselves and to be the best version of themselves without the guilt/fear of their past experiences.

In today’s society with the #MeToo campaign it has allowed women to have a voice, and Gems is another addition to building a safer community. I want to help guide individuals who have been impacted by abuse to stand tall, but also bring awareness to parents with young daughters of what is acceptable and what is not. I have watched this organization grow the last couple of years and it truly amazes me how many people it has impacted. I just hope to be a small stepping stone in everything that Gems can achieve.

Victoria Howe

Community Ambassador, AB

No woman should EVER feel unsafe. Women and their children need to know there are people who care and will help them to get out of a violent situation. Children should not see their mom being abused by a man, husband, friend, father, uncle, brother. Leaving this situation is just the start, afterwards, the healing, health, guidance, education, love and support is another step that is extremely hard for someone. I am fortunate to have a strong personality, to have witnessed this as a child which is why I am so independent as I never wanted to be in a situation where I was unable to leave. I have 2 grown daughters and a son. I am blessed to have 2 grandchildren. I am at a point in my life where I am able to help others that have and are still living through this

Tom Guildford

Alberta Community Manager

Husband, father and businessman: “My career path and journey started in the east coast from running rickshaw to growing in sales. This led to an MBA, a change in focus to finance and business management and has led to a career in banking, project funding and business consulting. I am now actively working in oil and gas, independent financial consultation and proud ambassador to Gems for Gems. Gems for Gems speaks to me on multiple levels. As a father of a young daughter, I want my girl to grow up to be as strong as her mother without the trials and tribulations. For my son, I need to lead by example to show him the power and strength in respect and kindness to all people but especially woman. For my wife, I want her to know that I have her back 100% of the time and will always stand up with her and for her. For myself, Gems for Gems allows me to showcase all of these traits and showcasing that domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue, but if nothing else, than truly a men’s issue.“

Regina Jenkins

Community Ambassador, Alberta

I was originally born in Toronto and moved to Perth, Western Australia at a young age. I worked and holidayed in my 20’s and knew I would come back one day. My husband Darryl and I holidayed in Canada 2006 and 2008 and decided to move here as it was always a dream of ours to experience life in Canada.

I love the quietness and beauty of the mountains and enjoy hiking, walking our German Shepherd Neeva, and having a coffee with my best friend Darryl and my girlfriends who inspire me. I felt very humbled in being asked to consider volunteering for “Gems for Gems”. I have always wanted to be involved in a worthy cause; it just takes time for your soul to resonate with what your heart needs.

Gems for Gems for me brings sunshine into the lives of women/girls who are struggling to move their lives forward and in knowing that there are people who genuinely care and can help to impact their lives in a very positive way. I would be honoured to be part of this great group of heartfelt women and men.

Susan Walton

Community Ambassador, Alberta

I always strive to live life to the fullest, passionately helping other women to do the same. Although I have not suffered from domestic abuse myself, my heart goes out to those who have. Knowing that pain can become power from within! I’ve had my share of obstacles to overcome (teen mom, single mom, and beating cancer) and live to inspire others to be all that they desire to be. My loving husband and incredible children are my pride and joy. Humour has served us well! Laughter is a healer, as is remembering joy. This along with self-care, one can move abundantly forward each and every day – one step at a time. As a Life Coach, I help my clients believe in themselves, gain confidence and motivate them to take steps in doing whatever it is they want to change. How to enhance and improve their lives, that it is within us all, in spite of their trials and tribulations. Instantly, I was moved by Jordan’s cause, her passion for solutions and mission. As an ambassador, I am wanting to bring all this and more to Gems for Gems.

I am a wife and mother of two beautiful girls. I have been looking for a charity that aligns with my company’s mission and when I was having coffee with a friend and was told about what Jordan is doing and how it is impacting so many women’s lives, I knew I had to become part of it. I am always looking for ways for the money to go further to help those in need. I currently support many small local business owners that provide support in our local community and Gems for Gems fits perfectly with my vision. Gems for Gems mission of “Be The Change” is what I strive to be!

Julie Hodge

I was completely honoured when Gems for Gems ambassador David and founder Jordan suggested that I become an ambassador. You see, I’ve devoted 27 years of my career in supporting and encouraging women of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities to empower themselves through health, fitness and educated choices, and am an avid believer that lasting change happens from the inside out. So the opportunity to be an ambassador for Gems for Gems?
Wow, what a powerful way to further serve women (and all those who love them) while working to help end the cycle of abuse. Everybody deserves to live in dignity and I’ve watched Gems for Gems grow so much in a few short years from the sidelines, always silently cheering on Jordan and her team… I am so excited to learn, grow, stretch and serve the Gems for Gems efforts to help that spark grow into the fire!

David Shilson

Enjoys the occasional scotch and cigar on the deck.

Gems has impacted me by opening my eyes to how little help women suffering from domestic abuse receive after leaving shelter. How because of this many women return to abusive relationships and back to shelters sometime many times. It breaks my heart to think of someone having to return to someone that causes them so much pain because there is so little help to change their lives. Gems also opened my eyes to how men react and treat women reporting domestic abuse and how we don’t support women.

Lyndee Free

As a former Shaw TV Reporter, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many different organizations around our wonderful city. One of them was a foundation that helped house abused women and their children. I saw first hand how domestic abuse can devastate a family and how some had nowhere to turn. Another company I had the pleasure of working with was Gems for Gems, and I always said if an opportunity came up to do more, I would take it – so here I am!!!
Lyndee has been following Gems for Gems since it’s inception and is excited to become part a team of women dedicated to making a difference.

Mona Delisle

I am a part time single mother of two beautiful children ages 14 and 12. We have all survived a high conflict divorce and the toll that emotional abuse can take on a family. My independence was enabled by my education that allowed me to have a well-paying job. I worked with cancer patients for 15 years, I continue to work for Alberta Health Services where I am now dedicated to leading teams through quality improvement work that improves outcomes and safety of patients. I have a master’s degree in leadership and my superpower is developing my team so that they are able to achieve their own personal goals. I want to be part of the solution. The system is broken…sadly but truly…the system will not be there for women – Gems for Gems will be.

Sami El Dib

After the passing of my daughter Nadia El-Dib and having worked with Gems for Gems who has named a scholarship after her, I would love the opportunity to give back by helping others and being hands on with the initiative that has a great initiative to stop the cycle of domestic abuse. I do not want another family or woman to go through what we did and what my daughter was the outcome of a very violent act. To save even one woman in Nadia’s name would mean that her legacy has impacted someone.

Alberta Community Ambassador

“I attended school in Ottawa Ontario for Early Childhood Education, the. Moved to Calgary to try and expand my horizons. I am now working as a director at a daycare centre.

Relocating to Calgary was probably the best/scariest decisions of my life as i have never lived, or spent so much time away from my family. Family has always been the most important thing to me, yet this was a choice i had made to better myself. I have made so many new and exciting opportunities for myself, as well as met so many new and amazing people who have made the biggest impact on my life.

I like to think of myself as a hard worker, but also try to push myself to beat my fears whether it’s meeting new people, or trying to do something that I never thought i could achieve.

I am beyond honoured to work and to become a ‘Gem’ and can’t wait to see what the future of becoming a Gem has to offer. ‘Gems for Gems’ consists of a variety of hard working, caring, and amazing women who want to make a difference in other women’s lives. That’s what i’m hoping to achieve is to make a difference in someone else’s life.”

“I am quite honored to be a ‘Gem’ and look forward to working together with so many amazing women. It’s not every day you meet an entire group of women trying to build each other and other women up. This group reminds me of a quote ‘she builds others up, because she knows what it’s like to be torn down’ and that really hit home for me. Knowing every day, everyone has a different struggle- some harder than others and instead of knocking others down, it’s time to stand up and rebuild. Thank you for letting me share this amazing experience with you.”

Ang Ferlaino

Alberta Community Ambassador

“I am honored and inspired to have been asked to join Gem for Gems. I moved to Calgary from Montreal looking for change, stability and opportunity. What I found was so much more; a fantastic support network of friends and family who are encouraging of my goals and dreams. I am blessed to to be able to stay home with my son, while working part time providing nutrition assessments and am back in school pursuing my dreams of working in the medical field.

Gems for Gems is a great organization that provides a positive forum for women to work together in support of each other. I am looking forward to connecting with all the wonderful women in this organization as well as paying forward all the kindness, generosity and support I was lucky enough to receive when I first moved here.”

Delaynie Golinoski

Alberta Community Ambassador

“I grew up in the town of Okotoks just south of Calgary. In high school I was always very involved in the community. It made me happy to be a part of the change that I wanted to see. Since graduating I’ve felt as though I’m not doing my part in helping the community move forward.
I graduated in 2014 and have gone to hair school and become a licensed hair stylist at The Vanity Vault in Calgary. I’ve been working there for the past two years.
Working with so many women on a daily basis has helped me understand the struggles that women go through as wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and grandmothers. I enjoy making women look and feel beautiful on the inside & outside.
Joining Gems for Gems means that I can be a part of the community again and help women all over discover their sparkle.”

Lydia Kollerova

Alberta Community Ambassador

‘When I moved to Calgary in January 2015 my self-esteem and confidence were really low. I have been shown support, trust, guidance and friendship by so many women when I started my first job at Orangetheory Fitness Seton! Owners, trainers, coworkers and members in the gym helped me achieve what I have right now and would never think of – it’s thanks to them that I run the store today! Joining Gems for Gems means now it’s my time to pay it forward and help women in achieving their ”impossible”.’

Kathy Smart

Calgary Ambassador

I love my work with e=mc2 events (with offices in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto) as their Director of Marketing & Sales. Prior to joining “e” in 2015, I was four and a half years as the Director of Marketing for RedPoint Media and Marketing Solutions, publishers of Avenue and WestJet magazines.

With over 30 years of marketing and sales experience, I have built an extensive, ever-growing network and have met some incredible people along the way. One of which was Jordan. It was a meeting meant to be and I look forward to supporting such an incredible group of people doing great and amazing work.

Karla Gourdeau

Team Lead Ambassador Management, Alberta Community Ambassador

“My name is Karla Gourdeau and I have lived in Calgary all my life. I worked for an independent jewelry store for 7 years and am a Graduate Jeweller (aka I love all kinds of gems)! I left the jewelry industry for the less glamorous world of big corporate oil and gas where I currently work as a Chartered Accountant.

I am passionate about women’s roles in a male dominated industry and hope to see more and more women in leadership roles and around boardroom tables throughout my career and never take my seat at the table for granted! I feel very strongly about what the Gems for Gems mission and vision is, I especially love the scholarship program as I’ve always felt so privileged to have the education that I do as it’s always been my safety net and I want to see other women be able to change their life circumstances through the scholarship program.

I am excited to be apart of Gems as I truly believe in the “empowered women, empower women” quote and I have had the good fortune of a strong lady tribe to pull me up through my darkest moments and I would love the opportunity to give back and pay it forward!”

Dalyn Sjogren

Alberta Community Ambassador

Passionate about helping women nurture their skin, beauty and soul, Dalyn takes women through her unique Goddess treatments that provide a total inner and outer journey to finding happiness, beauty and loving who they are.  With her expertise, desire, and devotion, Dalyn works with you to understand your desires and provide you with an unforgettable and valued experience.

Dalyn is a Certified Professional Makeup Artist, Clinical Aesthetician, and Reiki Practitioner.  She has three teenage children and lives in Calgary.“In my teens, I had a passion for beauty and wellness. I began doing skin care consultations, makeovers, and bridal makeup in 1988, but lacked the confidence to follow my dreams.  Instead, I did what I was told was the “right” thing and went into secretarial work.  This led me to becoming an HR Professional for 15 years.  During those years I developed my skills building my own HR, Training & Coaching business.

I came to realize the importance of pursuing my passion after many life changing, eye opening experiences and being the target of bullying and abuse.  I realized the patterns I had created in my life came from having no self-confidence and feeling of self-worth.  I had to change my mindset, heal and recover for my life to change. Listening to my heart, I began following my dreams. Tapping into my talent, skills and desire for helping women shine, Daysdream was conceived.

I am thrilled to join Gems for Gems as an ambassador because I am very passionate about helping empower women and I feel Gems for Gems and Daysdream is a perfect fit together! I feel that me being an ambassador is powerful to have an input in making a change for the better, directly helping empower women to feel like the goddess they deserve to be, building their confidence and self-worth.”
